Atlantic City and Surroundings, November 2015

The Atlantic City Trip was a last minute substitute for the Portugal River Cruise that Vantage Travel bumped us from at the last minute. Our plane was delayed arriving in Houston due to some mechanical issues. We ended up arriving in Newark after midnight. The Advantage Car rental dude completed one transaction for every three the Budget Rental guy was able to process, so by the time we got the car and starting to drive it was around 2 am. We arrived at the Atlantic Palace Hotel at 5 am.

After a few hours sleep, I checked out the boardwalk to figure out where we were. The wind was wicked cold. I came back to see what Remy wanted to do, and she sent me for sandwiches. I went to the bus station to get our tickets to NY and bought some Philadelphia cheese steaks from an Italian shop on the boardwalk.

That evening we went to a buffet at the Borgata Casino courtesy of June and Alice. We only gambled a couple hours only because we had an early bus to NYC. I won $110.

SUNDAY,
We got up early so I could drop Remy off at the Bus station, park back at the hotel and walk back to the station. When we tried to board our 7 am bus we found out it was already full from the passengers they picked up at the earlier stops at the casinos. Apparently the time stamp on our tickets doesn't mean anything and they are all first come first serve tickets. We were able to get an 8:30 bus that got us to the station around 10:45. Took a taxi to St Patrick's Cathedral. Got there at 11:15 in time to hear the closing songs of the 10:15 Mass. Stayed for the 12:00 mass, which did not have a choir.

After Mass we walked a block or so to the Rockefeller Center . The skating rink was going full scale, and the Christmas Tree was in place but covered with scaffold board and a banner. I guess they were still in the process of decorating it. I got a chilly dog with cheese and some Beef and Chicken Shish k-bob's for Remy.

When we finished our snack, we took a taxi to the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. We saw the musical "Beautiful", about Carole King’s life. It was awesome. The bus station was only a block or two from the theatre, so we walked to there after the show and were on our way back to Atlantic City. Ate dinner at the cafeteria at the bus station and took a taxi back to the hotel. Thus completed one long day.

Everything we did was close by. Click to see a map of our adventure points.

Monday, We drove to Clifton, NJ to visit Roland and Tess. Had a little trouble with the last block finding their house. Roland treated us to an Italian lunch. When we got backto their house, I napped an hour or so, while Remy and Tess visited the nearby Holy Face Monastery. Later they had halo halo, then we drove back to AC.
Tuesday, Today we did the A1 Tours "Atlantic SIP, Taste and Tour (Sight Seers Delight Tour)". Our meeting place was in front of the Korean War Memorial. The Memorial is located next to Bally's Casino and buts up to the boardwalk. Our first stop was at the Noyes Museum of Art. It was an interesting small Museum that we spent some time looking at the displays. Remy particularly liked the Linda Stein transgender display. I think the Obama in a skirt is appropriate. The Frozen Earth and the Humanist paintings were also interesting. Not sure I was impressed with the photos of garbage up north.

Next stop was the Historic Smithville Inn for Lunch. We discussed ordering wine with lunch, but chose not since the wine tasting was next on the agenda. I ordered the Chicken Aioli, which had garlic, bacon, tomato, spinach, feta, penne in extra virgin olive oil. It was very good, and the serving was enough for two meals.

Lastly we sipped wine from Tomasellos Winery. Included was five tastes of various wines of our choosing. We got to keep a souvenir glass as part of the deal, and bought some wine to take back.

Tour guide brought us back to Bally’s where I lost $200 over the next hour or so. It went quick.

Wednesday, another long drive to Dover, Delaware to visit Bert and Tess. We had a long lunch at their place then headed to Dover Downs to learn her new way of losing money. Now you can play 3 card poker as part of the black jack hand. I was doing ok with the black jack part, but the poker part was not working, overall I lost about $30.
Thursday, The day started with visits to the Outlet Stores. I got a couple of pairs of running shoes, two leather belts and two long sleeve shirts. We brought our purchases back to the room then started our second A1 winery tour.

Today's A1 Tour is called: "Atlantic City Ultimate Wine and Dine Tour ". It was a rainy day so the view of the Renault Winery grounds was limited. We started off with a tour of a museum of antique wine glasses and a historical summary of the winery and the way they coped with the prohibition period. Tour included some interesting stories about how the lambrusco root saved the European grape varieties, etc. This is the second oldest winery in the USA. The California Wineries are all post pohibition.

The tour included views of some huge barrels as well as the various. corking and other apparatus involved in the business. The Renault winery is the only American Winery that can use the term Champagne in their repertoire, they have been grandfathered from their early history.

After the tour we got to purchase the various vines we tasted. They wouldn't ship out of state, so we had to limit our purchases to what we could pack.

Next we sat down to dinner in their restaraunt. The winery includes rooms for weddings, comedy shows and many other various events. We both ordered the Eggplant Rollatini stuffed with ricotta cheese. It was very good. It resembled a Cannelloni but with fried eggplant instead of a pasta shell. Never had that before, but Remy says she can do that. We will see about that.

Friday, Remy's original plan was to continue the Outlet Stores today, but with all the bottles of wine we bought, decided to just take our time packing and head back to the airport earlier. We were able to check the bags outside and the Southwest Agent got her a wheelchair so I could then return the rental car and return to the airport without all the weight. So that worked out good. Got back to Corpus Christi around 11:00 pm and home a short time later.

End of story.
